Intarsia can also be called "picture knitting".  It involves knitting with multiple colors, but it is not the same as Fair Isle knitting.  For Fair Isle knitting, two colors are carried across an entire row, resulting in an extra-thick fabric.  For Intarsia knitting, you work with one color at a time, switching colors as you go across a row, maintaining a fabric of single thickness.

Project

In this class, you will knit an almost seamless baby's or child's vest with built-in hem and facings, and a zipper closure.  The Intarsia sections were designed by my teen-aged son!  Kona Superwash was used for the model.

Materials

  • Main color yarn – 100 grams of approximately worsted weight yarn.  Worsted weight yarn usually knits to a gauge of between 4.75 and 5 stitches to the inch.  A thinner yarn will produce a smaller vest, and a thicker yarn will produce a larger vest.  I recommend that you use wool or a machine washable (superwash) wool for this class.  Kona Superwash Wool was used for the class model, which measures 11" across (22" around) and 9" from shoulder to hem).  I used almost all of a 100 gram skein of Cascade 220 Superwash for the main color of another sample.
  • Contrasting color yarn 50 grams of the same weight as the main color yarn.
  • Needles – U.S. size 6 (4.0 mm) circular or straight needles.  You will get the best results with a slightly firmer fabric, so go down a size or two from what you would normally use for the yarn selected.
  • Double point needles in the same size as the circular or straight needles.
  • Additional needle of equal or smaller size, to use for the "three needle join"
  • Small (snack or sandwich size) ziploc bags
  • Crochet hook size G (or something close)
  • Stitch holders
  • Stitch markers
  • Blunt darning needle
  • Sharp tapestry needle
  • Coilless safety pins
  • Scissors
  • Separating zipper, 7" or longer (you will most likely need to shorten it, which I will show you how to do)
