New to knitting, or just looking for some quick and simple scarves to knit?  Choose from half a dozen easy (and free!) patterns and learn a few basic skills along the way.

Project

In this class, you will choose a simple scarf to knit.

Materials

Sorry, but all needle sizes and yarn weights and amounts are variable, depending on how tightly or loosely you knit, which pattern and yarn you choose, and how long you want your scarf to be (most of mine are around 5 1/2 feet long).  I'll do my best to list what I used for each of the scarves pictured above -- you do your best to figure out how that applies to you.

First, some STRONG recommendations:

  • DO NOT bring any fluffy or furry yarn to this class.  If you can't easily see the strands of yarn in the ball or hank, you won't be able to see the stitches as you're learning to knit.  Save the fluff and fur for your second or third scarf.

  • When in doubt, buy extra yarn and save your receipt (check the store's return policy).

  • Even though I use circular needles for almost everything else, I found it much easier to use straight needles for most of these scarves.  Exceptions are noted.

  • The needle sizes listed are what I used to knit the scarves shown above.  I am a loose knitter, so I usually use a smaller needle than an average or tight knitter.  If possible, bring all of the needles you own, in case you want to experiment with needle sizes.

Here's what I used:

All Scarves

  • Blunt darning needle

  • Scissors

Scarf #1 (Garter stitch, widthwise)

  • Yarn – approximately 200 yards (220 m) of a yarn with a gauge of no more than 5 stitches to the inch (or 20 stitches to 4 inches).  I used one 175 gram hank of recycled silk from Mango Moon.  You can use a yarn with more stitches to the inch, but the scarf will take longer to knit and I don't want you to get bored!
  • Needles – U.S. 13 (9 mm) were used with the Mango Moon, which is a fairly heavy yarn.  Choose needles a couple of sizes larger than what the yarn label recommends.
  • Optional additional needles – U.S. 10.5 (6.5 mm) used for the first and last 6 inches of the scarf pictured.

Scarf #2 (Garter stitch, lengthwise, with fringe added as you go)

  • Yarn – approximately 150 grams total (5.25 ounces) of one or more yarns.  If using multiple yarns, choose some novelty yarns and at least one plain yarn.  I used yarn from my stash.
  • Needles – U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) circular (at least 24" long) needles
  • Optional crochet hook – U.S. G or H (4.25 mm or 5.0 mm)

Scarf #3 (Garter stitch, lengthwise, with "magic" fringe)

  • Yarn – approximately 150 grams total (5.25 ounces) of one yarn.  I used Cotton Classic from Tahki.
  • Needles – U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) circular (at least 24" long) needles
  • Optional crochet hook – U.S. G or H (4.25 mm or 5.0 mm)

Scarf #4 (Stockinette stitch)

  • Yarn – approximately 150 grams (5.25 ounces) of a yarn with a gauge of no more than 5 stitches to the inch (or 20 stitches to 4 inches).  I used a discontinued yarn called Basta from Filatura di Crosa.
  • Needles – U.S. 10.5 (6.5 mm)

Scarf #5 (Ribbed)

  • Yarn – approximately 150 grams of a yarn with a gauge of around 3 stitches to the inch (or 12 stitches to 4 inches).  I used New York from Lanas Stop.
  • Needles – U.S. 17 (12 mm)

Scarf #6 (Seed stitch)

  • Yarn – approximately 150 grams (total) of a yarn with a gauge of no more than 5 stitches to the inch (or 20 stitches to 4 inches).  I used Misti Alpaca Worsted.
  • Needles – U.S. 7 (4.5 mm)

Session 1 Topics

  • Knitting

Session 2 Topics
