Description

2 sessions

Cost:  $30

Skill level:  Beginner

Start with a circular needle and finish on double points while trying out a few stylish hat patterns.

Project

In this class, you will choose a simple hat to knit.

NOTE:  The hats are shown in order of difficulty, from most easy to least easy.

Materials

Sorry, but all needle sizes and yarn weights and amounts are variable, depending on how tightly or loosely you knit, which pattern and yarn you choose, and how big you want your hat to be (mine are sized for adults).  I'll do my best to list what I used for each of the hats pictured above -- you do your best to figure out how that applies to you.

Good advice:

  • When in doubt, buy extra yarn and save your receipt (check the store's return policy).

  • The needle sizes listed are what I used to knit the hats shown above.  I am a loose knitter, so I usually use a smaller needle than an average or tight knitter.  If possible, bring all of the needles you own, in case you want to experiment with needle sizes.

Here's what I used:

All Hats

  • Stitch marker

  • Safety pin

  • Blunt darning needle

  • Scissors

Hat #1 (Stockinette stitch, with rolled brim)

  • Yarn – approximately 75-100grams (2.5-3.5 ounces) of a yarn with a gauge of about 4 stitches to the inch (or 16 stitches to 4 inches).  I used a discontinued yarn from Filatura di Crosa called Basta.
  • Needles – U.S. 8 (5 mm) 16 inch circular, and a set of U.S. 8 (5 mm) double pointed needles.

Hat #2 (Ribbed)

  • Yarn – approximately 100-150 grams (3.5-5.25 ounces) of a yarn with a gauge of about 3 stitches to the inch (or 12 stitches to 4 inches).  I used New York from Lanas Stop.
  • Needles – U.S. 15 (10 mm) 16 inch circular, and a set of U.S. 15 (10 mm) double pointed needles.

Hat #3 (Color stripes, with ribbed border)

  • Yarn – approximately 75-100 grams (2.5-3.5 ounces) of a yarn with a gauge of about 4.5 stitches to the inch (or 18 stitches to 4 inches).  I used Lamb's Pride Worsted from Brown Sheep.
  • Needles – U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) 16 inch circular, and a set of U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) double pointed needles.

Hat #4 (Garter stitch stripes, with hem)

  • Yarn – approximately 75-100 grams (2.5-3.5 ounces) of a yarn with a gauge of about 5.5 stitches to the inch (or 22 stitches to 4 inches).  I used Pop Art Fantasy from Adriafil.
  • Needles – U.S. 3 (3.25 mm) 16 inch circular, and a set of U.S. 3 (3.25 mm) double pointed needles.
